The Khmer Rouge troops were a clique without culture. When there is culture there is knowledge,
and this ensures a good and dignified livelihood in society. The pictures talk about the
ideological current of the Maoist doctrine that the genocidal Pol Pot regime applied in
Cambodia, following the example of Chinese Cultural Revolution. Pol Pot made the national
anthem of Democratic Kampuchea very famous and turned this country into a killing field- the
country had fallen below zero.

Chhim Sothy studied at the Royal University of Fine Arts, Phnom Penh, where he specialized in Buddhist
themes such as the Ramayana, a mythical Hindu epic. His painting reflects traditional sources combined with
contemporary elements. His oil works have been exhibited in Thailand, Singapore, USA and France.
